Langkawi Island is an archipelago of 99 islands, which is separated from the Malaysian mainland by the Straits of Malacca. Langkawi is one of the districts in Kedah state, Malaysia. Langkawi is also known as the ‘Jewel of Kedah’. Out of 99 islands of this archipelago, only four are inhabited.
The four islands with inhabitants are Pulau Langkawi (the main island), Pulau Rebak, Pulau Dayang Bunting, and Pulau Rebak. Machincang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park and Kilim Karst Geoforest Park are the three major conservation areas of the Langkawi Island.

Air travel is the fastest & recommended way to reach Langkawi from Singapore. Malaysian Airlines, AirAsia, Tiger Air and Silk Air are operating direct flights to Langkawi from Singapore. There are no direct buses available from Singapore to Langkawi. Daily bus trips are available from Singapore to Alor Setar and it is very convenient. Luxury coaches as well as public buses are available from Singapore. Some of the bus operators that provide daily services from Singapore to Alor Setar are Sri Maju, Transnasional, Konsortium Express, and many more.
The pick-up point may differ according to the bus operators. The buses are starting from different terminals in Singapore such as Duta Bus Station, Hentian Duta, Bukit Kayu Hitam Bus Terminal, and Puduraya Bus Terminal. The dropping point is Alor Setar Terminal.
The travel time from Singapore to Alor Setar is 8-10 hours. Local buses are available from Alor Setar to Kuala Perlis/Kuala Kedah Jetty. The journey time from Alor Setar to Kuala Perlis is around 48 minutes. The travel time from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah is about 15 minutes.
Another option to travel by bus from Singapore to Langkawi is to get down at Kuala Lumpur. From Kuala Lumpur bus terminal, there are buses to Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah jetties & you can take one of the bus to travel from KL to Langkawi.
There is no direct road connection from Singapore to Langkawi. You should use the combination of two types of transportation to reach Langkawi from Singapore. If you are driving from Singapore to Langkawi, then you have to first drive to Kedah or Kuala Perlis Jetty. From Kedah or Kuala Perlis Jetty, you’ve to catch a ferry service to reach Langkawi.
To reach Kuala Kedah, you have to drive through AH2 and North South Expressway. Take an exit at Alor Setar Selatan from North South Expressway and continue to Kuala Kedah. The traveling time from Singapore to Kuala Kedah is 10 to 11 hours.
To reach Kuala Perlis, you have to follow AH2 and North South Expressway (E1) to Jitra, and then continue to Kuala Perlis. The traveling time required from Singapore to Kuala Perlis is 11-12 hours.
You have to park the car at a private car park at Kuala Kedah/Kuala Perlis. The cost of parking will be RM 6- 8 on a daily basis. If you would like to take your car to Langkawi, then you have to take a cargo vessel that will reach only on the next day at Langkawi. To transport your car, you have to pay a return ticket of RM 160. Transport a car to Langkawi Island is a costly affair, which is not recommended unless you are staying in the island for a long duration.
There is no direct ferry service from Singapore to Langkawi so you have to get to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis first by bus or car first. There are daily ferry services from both Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah jetties to Langkawi. Most of the ferry services operate from 8am in the morning to 6pm. The journey time from Kuala Kedah to Langkawi is 1 hour 45 minutes and from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi is 1 hour 15 minutes. The fare from Kuala Kedah is RM 15 and from Kuala Perlis is RM 18.
There are no direct trains from Singapore to Langkawi. You can take train services from Singapore to Alor Setar or Arau. If you get down at the Alor Setar station, then you can take a taxi or bus to Kuala Kedah jetty. If you get down at Arau, then you will get a taxi or bus to Kuala Perlis jetty. From any of these jetties, you can take a ferry service to Langkawi.
